Advice needed: WW1 plaque

Can anyone help Solihull Heritage Information and Digital Services Manager  with the following

We’d be grateful if anyone from the network would be able to help us provide the enquirer with:

Information about the plaque itself:  It clearly isn’t a standard one, and we haven’t seen one like it before. Featuring all three forces suggests it was a generic one – presumably a high-end commercial manufacture? How unusual is it?

Information about how it might best be restored, and who would be suitable people for the enquirer to approach for this purpose

“The plaque was brought in to us by someone from the local British Legion branch, following the launch of our “Solihull Remembers” World War I exhibition. The plaque consists of two parts:

–          A wooden header which forms a frame for the “Dead Man’s Penny” or Next of Kin Memorial Plaque; and

–          A wooden, portrait-format frame, 55cmx45cm, which holds a moulded plaster insert depicting what may be a take on the Whitehall cenotaph, with shipping in the bottom left-hand corner, soldiers in the bottom right-hand corner, and aeroplanes to left and right at the top – so covering all the forces. A postcard-sized hole in the middle of this insert holds a card, “IN LOVING MEMORY Of Our Dear Son, Pte. ….”

The plaque was found in a Solihull loft. We believe the deceased’s sister married and moved to Solihull, which is why the plaque is here, though he himself had no connection with Solihull that we know of.

The plaque has been left with us for safekeeping for the moment.”

If you can help, please use the comment box below and we will forward the information. Many thanks

  1. I have no idea of when you posted this query, and you may already have plenty of replies.

But, if not, please see following website with similar item for sale

    https://uk.storeslider.com/two-memorial-ww1-plaques-in-frame-hodson-brothers-171881659425e.html

‘Two WW1 Memorial Plaques named to Fred Hodson and Arthur Hodson, two brothers from the village of Welton, near Lincoln. The plaques are mounted for display in a contemporary frame, which also contains a memorial card with the brothers’ details.’

  2. I am related to the two Hodson Brothers (Great Niece) and have just managed to purchase the two memorial plaques from a collector, sadly he removed them from the frame shown in the picture and intends to put others in the frame. I live in New Zealand and its been difficult dealing from so far away, I just wondered if Solihull Heritage could advise how old they think the frame is as it is the same as the one in their possession. The collector says its a new frame!!
